What Is Women’s Health?

Women’s health is a broad term that encompasses different medicine areas and is dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of health conditions that are either specific to women or significantly affect women more than men.

While it mainly covers reproductive health issues like menstruation, contraception, fertility, reproductive organs health, and conditions like ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, and endometriosis; it can also involve other concerns that have higher risks on women.

What Types of Services and Procedures are Included in Women’s Health?

Offered by a mix of mainly OB/GYN professionals, primary care professionals, and nurse practitioners, women’s health generally includes:

    • Preventive care and annual check ups such as gynecological exams, pap smears, mammograms, immunizations, bone density testing and more.
    • Reproductive health services like contraception counseling and provision, STIs screenings and treatment, fertility evaluations and menstrual health management.
    • Obstetrics
    • Menopause management
    • Addressing health conditions like uterine fibroids, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, prolapses, urinary incontinence, and more.

Women’s Health Diagnosis and Treatment

While the specific process will vary depending on your concerns and symptoms, here’s a general overview of what can you expect:

  1. First of all, your provider will review your medical history and inquire about your current worries and symptoms. This will include questions about menstrual and sexual history, as well as family conditions and overall lifestyle.
  2. Then you will get a physical examination.
  3. Sometimes, your doctor can order laboratory tests, such as urine, pap, HPV tests, or blood work to check hormones, STIs, etc.
  4. Imaging tests might be necessary too, and some examples are ultrasounds, mammograms, and/or MRIs.
  5. If your doctor finds abnormal cells or tissues they might send a small sample of a biopsy and rule out cancer or other conditions.

Pro tip: Remember to inform your provider of any allergies you have, bring a list of the immunizations shots you have received and medicines you take, share illnesses you had or are dealing with, and symptoms that include dizziness, chest pain, heat illness, or shortness of breath.
