What Is a Sports Physical?

A sports physical is a series of examinations that ensure that a person is healthy enough to meet the physical demands of a specific sport or activity. Different from well-child visits and routine check-ups, it is aimed at assessing risk factors that might affect a person’s ability to perform. Although it is similar to standard physical exams, it should not be taken as a substitute.

Why Get a Sports Physical

You will usually need a sports physical to:

  • Evaluate your ability to sustain a certain level of activity.
  • Measure the maturity of the body
  • Assess physical fitness—where you are on your journey.
  • Have a holistic view of past physical trauma and how to work around it.
  • Find underlying conditions that might hinder or halt your performance.
  • Receive advice on how to protect yourself from injury when doing sports.
  • Monitor conditions while exercising.

Pro tip: Remember to inform Carla Aldaz of any allergies you have, bring a list of the immunizations shots you have received and medicines you take, share illnesses you had or are dealing with, and symptoms that include dizziness, chest pain, heat illness, or shortness of breath.
